Lucille Hoobler Rivers’ Honeymoon Journal — June 1927
June 15th — Our marriage Day. Married at 12 o’clock.
Luncheon at 12:30
Went to Rivers’ home – Looked at gifts and Guest Book
Took pictures of family. Changed clothes and started for Grand Island at
3 o’clock. Arrived in G.I. at 6 o’clock – Had supper and retired to our room which was at Hotel Yancey on 6th floor. Beautiful room.
At 8 o’clock next morning we left Grand Island for Julesburg, Colorado.
Raining hard. Ate dinner at Gothenburg – made short stop at Ogallala.
Roads chucky between Gothenburg & Ogallala – from there on to
Brule, Colo. (actually in Nebraska) – we waded mud two feet deep in places.
10 miles per hour was our speed – Broke spring and wore a hole in gas pipe.
Ate supper at Big Springs and traveled on to Julesburg for the night.
Left Julesburg next morning at 9 o’clock.
Had pipe hole soldered and C (Clayton) got a shave. Had a rotten room this night. We then went to Sterling where we had the spring fixed and ate dinner. Then went to Greeley over which road we struck desert.
Sterling, Greeley and Loveland beautiful towns. Reached Loveland at six o’clock.
Ate supper at Thelma’s [cousin–Alberta Hall Spahr’s youngest daughter "Tommy"] — Stayed all night.
Next morning dressed chicken and Thelma gave us a quart of black cherries and glass of jelly for us to take up to camp. We left Loveland at nine o’clock and got to Camp Cedarmont at 12 o’clock. Got cabin and had our 1st meal.
Just rested the rest of P.M. – walking up the canyon sightseeing in the evening.
Clayton and I climbed to top of Cedarmont and viewed the valley.
Drove to Estes Park Sun. morning.
Mon. P.M. – we drove to Estes and down St. Urain canyon to Boulder up to Boulder Falls and back to camp by way of Longmont and Loveland.
Arrived home at 9 o’clock – ate cold lunch and retired.
Tuesday we explored Bridal camp and looked for cones.
Wed. – Took pictures of canyon and went scouting up behind cabin.
Thurs. – Took the Fall River drive 96 miles up over Continental Divide through snow banks 20 feet high or more. Registered at Shelter House at top of Divide.
Drove down to Grand Lake where we took dinner. Started back over drive home. Reached home at 7 o’clock. Retired early getting up early to leave for Loveland where we spent the day and nite with Thelma. Saturday morning at
6 o’clock we left for Burlington near Denver. Ate dinner and reached Chester’s [cousin Chester Spahr–son of Austin & Alberta Spahr] at 2 o’clock. Cleaned up and drove on to Burlington where we saw folks.
Took in band concert and show – went out to Chester’s for nite and Sunday until
5 o’clock when we then went in to Uncle Austin’s. (Austin & Alberta Hall Spahr’s–older sister of mother Melissa Hall Hoobler) Spent nite with them leaving there at 4 o’clock Monday morning for home.
About 10 miles out had a break on gas line. Clayton walked two miles – phone failed so bought one off an old Overland man had in yard.
Sped on until we reached (almost) Wray when we had a puncture.
Ate breakfast in Wray around 7 o’ clock. Great Luck from there on. Ate dinner at McCook. Got as far as Axtell at 3 o’clock. Had more car trouble when we were compelled to wait until 9 o’clock that evening. Went to Minden and stayed all night. Left for Fairmont around 7:30 – Ate dinner at café with Ross & Vye [cousin–daughter Austin & Alberta]. Came on home (Seward, NE) reaching here in P.M. at 3 o’clock.
Tired but glad to be back—-
