Jesse and Jillian Goembel’s marriage day was months in the making.
“Yup. Fourteen months was our engagement,” Jillian said.
Fourteen months they spent planning one of the happiest and most important days of their lives. Not included in their plans is what happened during their July 6 marriage reception at Edinburgh USA.
“We had a friend that was trying to put their card in the box and he couldn’t find it,” Jillian recalled.
The guest couldn’t find it because a man who was not on the guest list swiped the card box off the table and carried it out, as captured in a surveillance photo.
“It’s a very distinct box,” Jillian said. “I remember picking it out. I had plans to keep some mementoes in there from our big day and keep my bouquet in it.”
She estimates that it contained about $1,200 to $1,500 worth of gifts and dozens of heartfelt notes.
“So seeing him with it kinda crushed me and made it all that much more real,” she said.
Brooklyn Park Police Inspector Todd Milburn says this sort of case is “extremely rare.”
“This is the very 1st time that I can recall in my 20–plus years working for the city that this has happened to any type of facility in the city,” Milburn said.
Edinburgh security cameras caught the two suspects walking into the building. In fact, the female suspect even carried a card with her to blend in.
“So we figure she might have been a distraction or just trying to figure out how close of attention people were paying to the gift table,” Jillian said of the female suspect.
currently, the newlyweds — fresh off their honeymoon to Costa Rica — want others to know their story.
“We don’t want [other couples] to lose the memories or have this stain on their special day like we do on ours,” Jillian said.
They also hope someone out there can help them find the uninvited guests.
“Hopefully we’ll be able to track these two down and figure out how to take care of them from there I guess,” Jillian said.
As a safety measure, police suggest that marriage couples position the gift table away from any doors and they should also assign a person to watch the gifts at all times. Police also recommend that marriage guests write checks rather than stuffing the envelopes with cash or gift cards.
