"The invitations have been engraved….."
(Please view the large file……really!)
Ever hear this old saying? It implies that it is too late to withdraw from a commitment. This is because having the copper plates hand-engraved for a marriage, (and about 5 were needed, minimum), was a major expense. I was fortunate enough to find a set of 5 of these at an estate sale some while back……LOOK AT THEM! I will be posting all 5. Just as there are different levels of skill required in the wood-working trades….with carpenter, cabinet-makers and finally, patternmakers at the top…..so there were traditionally similar tiers of skill required for the different traditional applications of hand-engraving. The people who did this work for the purpose of printing were the "patternmakers" in the world of hand-engraving! I read somewhere that the true measure of any hand-engraver is the cursive script he/she can produce……mine is only just ‘fair’, by my own estimation…..But look at this!!!!!! It is soooooo perfect! It is why I can never accept any more than the most meager praise before I have to beg off and say, in fact, that I’m not that Great at all!!! LOOK AT IT!!!! And back in the day……this was the ‘standard’ for printing plates for important occasions…..every major city had dozens of such people who could produce this calibre of work…….really AWESOME!!!!!!….and those that know me know I hate that word!
Perfect control! No machines…no air-assist…..no nothing….but two or three gravers and a loupe! This is why I am always motivated to keep learning…….such beauty!
